A New Species of Deep-sea Ceratioid Anglerfish, Genus Himantolophus (Lophiiformes: Himantolophidae), from Southern Waters of All Three Major Oceans of the World
A new species of the deep-sea ceratioid anglerfish genus Himantolophus, long hidden within material identified as H. appelii Clarke, 1878, is described based on 43 female specimens collected in southern waters of all three major oceans of the world. A member of the H. appelii group, it differs from its sister-species, H. appelii, the only other member of the group, in details of escal morphology. The two species are geographically sympatric over much of their range.Abstract

Himantolophus stewarti, new species, holotype, 124 mm SL, CSIRO H.5652-01. After Pietsch (2009).

Illicia and escae of Himantolophus stewarti, new species: (A) RUSI 54509, 130 mm SL; (B) SAM 31615, 150 mm SL. Scale bar = 5 mm. After Anderson and Leslie (2001).

Himantolophus appelii, about 250 mm SL, CMC 1637, the second known specimen of the species, described by Waite (1912). After Waite (1912); image reversed.

Species of the Himantolophus appelii group: (A) Himantolophus sp., 38 mm SL, AMS I.20314-013 (after Bertelsen and Pietsch, 1983); (B) esca of Himantolophus sp., 39 mm SL, AMS I.16162-018 (after Bertelsen and Pietsch, 1983); (C) illicium and esca of Himantolophus appelii, 225 mm, IOAN 40510 (after Bertelsen and Krefft, 1988).

Relationship between escal appendage length and standard length in two species of the Himantolophus appelii group, based on known female specimens greater than 95 mm SL: (A) distal escal appendage; (B) posterior escal appendage. Himantolophus stewarti, new species (solid circles); Himantolophus appelii (open circles).

Geographic distribution of species of the Himantolophus appelii group, based on known female specimens greater than 95 mm SL: Himantolophus stewarti, new species (solid circles); Himantolophus appelii (open circles). A single symbol may represent more than one capture.
