Notropis calabazas (Teleostei; Cyprinidae): New Species from the Río Pánuco Basin of Central México
A new species of cyprinid, Notropis calabazas, is described from the Río Calabazas, a small tributary of the Río Verde in the Río Pánuco basin in San Luis Potosí state, central México. It belongs to the Notropis calientis complex, which is defined primarily on the occurrence of reduced and interrupted cephalic and lateralis sensory canals. Notropis calabazas is unique in having 17 or more gill rakers on the second gill arch versus 16 or fewer. Notropis calabazas can also be distinguished from the other three members of the complex by its relatively high numbers of gill rakers on the first arch, total lateral line scales, pored lateral line scales, body circumferential scale rows and caudal peduncle circumferential scale rows, and its relatively low numbers of supraorbital and infraorbital cephalic sensory pores. Notropis calabazas is uncommon within its limited range and warrants official designation as a protected species. Se describe una nueva especie de ciprínido, Notropis calabazas, para el Río Calabazas, un pequeño tributario del Río Verde en la Cuenca del Río Pánuco, en el estado de San Luis Potosí, México. La especie pertenece al complejo Notropis calientis, cuyos miembros se distinguen principalmente por presentar canales sensoriales cefálicos y laterales reducidos e interrumpidos. Notropis calabazas se distingue dentro del complejo por presentar 17 o más branquiespinas en el segundo arco branquial, frente a las 16 que presentan las demás especies. También se distingue de los otros tres miembros del complejo por presentar relativamente un mayor número de branquiespinas en el primer arco branquial, un mayor número de escamas en la línea lateral, mas escamas con poros en la línea lateral, un mayor nú mero de hileras de escamas en la circunferencia del cuerpo y un mayor número de hileras de escamas en la circunferencia del pedúnculo caudal. Por otro lado, N. calabazas presenta un número relativamente menor de poros sensoriales cefálicos infraorbitales y supraorbitales. Notropis calabazas es una especie poco común dentro de su rango de distribución por lo que requiere ser clasificada como una especie en peligro de manera oficial.Abstract
